Overview

Basics

Basics
This is a three-year study on the effects of white satin moth infestations on bird communities at Lake Tahoe. This invasive moth species has caused significant aspen defoliation and mortality in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park since the early 2010s, and this project will be the first to document impacts to bird communities that rely on aspen habitats at Lake Tahoe. Point-count bird surveys and nest monitoring will be conducted during the breeding season, and aspen habitat assessments will be conducted each year in order to quantify whether major structural changes in aspen communities caused by white satin moths have any effects on bird abundance, diversity, and nesting success.

02/02/2024 10:27 AM Mark Enders We anticipate re-entering into contract with TINS in 2024 so that this project can be completed.
02/17/2023 12:49 PM Mark Enders The contract with TINS expired in 2021 before analysis was completed. We turned our attention to other projects in 2022, but anticipate re-entering into contract with TINS in 2023 so that this project can be completed.
02/08/2022 5:01 PM Mark Enders All field work has been completed for this project, and Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) has begun analyzing the complete dataset. Unfortunately, COVID-19 placed considerable, unanticipated demands on TINS, and they have been unable to complete analyses and reporting according to the original 2021 timeline. The quality of these deliverables and the inferences and management implications we can draw from them are extremely important, so TINS will be continuing to work on these analyses, and full results for the 2018-2020 point count study and 2019-2020 nest monitoring will be presented in 2022.
