Overview

Basics

Basics
This project will reduce hazardous fuels and restore forest health on 20.5 acres of privately owned property within the Wildland Urban Interface of Incline Village, NV. There are 27 homes within and adjacent to the project area and 670 more homes within one-quarter mile. Two of the parcels serve to connect current and planned fuels reduction projects on federally owned land managed by the USFS. Crews will hand thin hazardous fuels to reduce potential fire behavior to a level that permits direct attack by first responders. Cut material will be piled and burned, or left on site in preparation for understory burning.

Threshold Categories

  • This project directly serves to reduce forest fuels in a manner that will enhance late seral forests by reducing competition between older established trees and younger regeneration fir and pine. In the absence of a natural fire return interval, plant diversity begins to decrease, and conditions become ripe for a catastrophic wildfire to occur. This project reduces the risk and impact of wildifre, and serves to enhance diversity by opening up niche that dwindle as time since last fire increases.

01/15/2019 10:11 AM April Shackelford Piles built in 2017 were safely and successfully burned in 2018. Funding was available to extend the project into a few additional small units. This material was hand thinned and chipped due to proximity to roads. In total 23.3 acres were treated for fuels reduction.
Community outreach was another component of this project. A neighborhood block party was held in Crystal Bay, NV and 26 residents received a rebate to help cover costs associated with creating defensible space. Similar Fire Adapted Community efforts began in the Whispering Pines neighborhood where a block party was held to generate motivation for becoming a Fire Adapted Neighborhood. These efforts are finalizing at the time of this writing using another grant funded project. The community chipping program made available by North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District was funded in 2016 by this project.
01/08/2018 6:23 PM April Shackelford In 2017, hand thinning was completed on all 20.5 acres within the project area. The burning of piles has begun in early 2018. If precipitation continues, remaining piles will burned during Winter and Spring of 2018.
